Theatre31 – Theatre for children & young people

Young actors perform on stage in a Play in a Week theatre project
Young actors perform at The Avenue Theatre during Ideas Test's Play in a Week theatre project in May 2018.

Theatre31 is a new imaginative theatre programme for children and young people who live on
the Isle of Sheppey and in Medway.

It’s a series of inspiring and creative activities created to raise young people’s aspirations and develop their skills and confidence around every aspect of theatre.

Young people are at the very heart of Theatre31, and we’re keen that they get involved to influence and shape the programme.

We Need Your Help

There are a number of ways that you can get involved, whether you’re a young person, a school, a community group, a parent or a carer we’d love to hear from you.

We’re carrying out a survey and the findings will help us to understand what theatre activity is currently available for young people in Medway and the Isle of Sheppey.

We also want to know what needs to change and how young people can help make more creative opportunities for other children and young people in the area.

It can be difficult for young people to access high-quality theatre performances. Other barriers can also include things like cost, transport or even having a supportive and willing parent or carer available to help out.

We want to gather as much information as possible at this stage and you can help us by completing the survey online here. If you want to share the survey offline you can download it as a PDF or as a Microsoft Word document.

Please send your completed surveys to Kat at

You can also email Kat if you want to talk to us about the survey, just get in touch and we will do our best to help.

Youth Panels

We’re setting up two youth panels, one on the Isle of Sheppey and one in Medway.

The youth panels will be run by young people, for young people, and being involved means that you will have your say in shaping and influencing the Theatre31 programme.

There will be a range of brilliant activities on offer and with the youth panel’s help, we aim to arrange a number of practical ‘go see’ trips to performances and behind the scenes theatre tours.

The youth panels will be encouraged to lead on all decisions relating to performance and commissioning opportunities for the Theatre31 programme.

We can’t do this without you, so if you would like to find out more please get in touch via email:

Commissioning Opportunities for Theatre Artists and Performing Companies

During 2020 the Theatre31 Youth Panels will be planning & creating commissioning opportunities for artists and performing companies.

The commissioning will be led by young people, advertised widely and will be open to anyone to apply.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the commissioning opportunities, please let us know by emailing
