Make Change was a pilot project across Medway and Swale for young people aged 15 to 25 to help them become Social Entrepreneurs.
We teamed up with Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) for Make Change, which was based on their The Agency project.
With The Agency, BAC gave young people in South London skills and experience of being Social Entrepreneurs.
Social entrepreneurs are people who use new ways to solve problems in their community, who take on projects to make positive changes in society through what they do
The young people – or Agents – took part in creative workshops, developed their research skills to produce an idea that they were passionate about.
At the end of the sessions the Agents would get the chance to pitch their idea to a panel.
Originally we planned the Make Change pilot to be for young people in Gillingham, but expanded it into Medway and Swale during the 2020 Lockdown.
What did young people get out of it?
They received support & mentoring from Ideas Test and Battersea Art Centre, including past Agents who took part in the London version of The Agency.
In total our Agents would get £600 worth of training for free.
The skills we wanted them to develop included
- Their confidence so they could make their own choices in work and their lives.
- Learn how to create a project.
- How to raise money for their projects.
- How to make decisions.
- How to present and pitch their ideas to others – think a friendly version of Dragon’s Den.
- How to work as part of a team and as leaders.
Our Agents also got a a £20 Amazon voucher for taking part to spend on anything they wanted.
When did the sessions run?
The sessions ran from late November to mid-December 2020.
What happens next?
Due to world events in 2020, Make Change was not as successful as we hoped. But as an action research project we’re looking for further ways to help young people in our communities bring their ideas into reality. We also want to nurture their talents and skills so they can become future artists, creative producers, and community champions.
We’ll be uploading a case study from our Critical Friend, Elizabeth Lynch on Our Work page in the near future.
