Family Arts Festival: Four fairy tales for all

Lauren Beck from Murston has instigated a charming project, funded under our special Family Arts round in July.

Taking inspiration from beloved traditional fairy tales, four family friendly events will take place throughout October half term week in different locations across Swale.

Murston and Sittingbourne will host interactive storytelling events where families can join in with the stories of the Three Little Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. This will involve crafts related to the stories, for example, for the Three Pigs, children will be making snouts to wear while joining in with the story, as well as drawing pigs, three of which will be chosen to go into a small book made to coincide with the whole of the project. Families will be able to take part by “Huffing & Puffing” as well as using instruments. This process will be repeated for Jack & the Beanstalk with alterations to the crafts, where decorated golden eggs can be taken home with script from the story. Selected photos and drawings made on the day will also be included in the book produced to document the project.

The second Murston workshop will be Little Snow White themed and will focused on the production of a banner, which will include bilingual text from the community, sharing their versions of the traditional tale. Segments of this banner and photos from the day will also feature in the book.

The last session in Sheerness is with young people, who will create the gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretel using a variety of different baking skills. Those taking part will be invited to contribute to a collage of mixed media for the accompanying book of the week.
