Sea Folk Sing Songwriter/Composer Commission 2019

Ideas Test are looking for 2 experienced songwriters/composers, and 2 emerging songwriters/composers aged 18-25 to create folk songs with people aged 55 and over in North Kent.

The songs will be inspired by the area’s local and varied history and heritage, using the theme of social activism. Later in 2019 the songs will be arranged and performed as choral music, with a multi-generational groups of community singers and musicians at venues in Medway, Gravesham, and Swale.

This year, Sea Folk Sing will Awake The Sea!

Songwriters, composers and musicians will explore the challenges people over 55 face around feelings of aging, lack of power and being isolated, whether through health or other reasons.

Sea Folk Sing will support people in North Kent to feel more confident and empowered through songs that tell their stories, thoughts, and feelings about how they experience the world today.

With the help of a community panel, we are commissioning songwriters/composers to work with older people to  co-create 8 brand new songs.

The 8 songs will be arranged as choral music and then performed by a choir and musicians of all ages. There will be multiple performances at venues across North Kent.

We are actively committed to equality of opportunity, and welcome applications from as broad a spectrum of creatives as possible, including those traditionally less represented, including but not limited to BAME and LGBTQ+ artists, emerging artists, and those from diverse socio economic backgrounds.
