From Bean To Bar – with Asantewaa Chocolat
31st March 2018 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pmFree
This Easter find out how chocolate is made!
Ideas Test is working with Diversity House to host a drop-in “meet the maker” session with Cacao Bean Farmer & artisan chocolate maker Ralph Eric Akyena-Brantuo from Asantewaa Chocolat.
Ralph Eric’s family have grown cacao beans in Ghana since 1892 and now he makes and sell premier products from his Swale base.
Like most children in cacao growing communities Ralph Eric’s family toiled on the farm and could not afford chocolate but fantasied about making it someday. This felt like an impossible dream. Though there is a glut of cacao beans in Ghana the practice has always been to export the fermented beans for cash.
A visit to the Speciality Fine Food Fair in 2013 rekindled Ralph Eric’s dream and passion to make chocolate. This saved the cocoa trees on their farm. They had planned to replace them, with oil palm trees, as cacao growing was no longer economically viable.
Today Asantewaa Chocolat are one of the few vertically integrated chocolate makers in the UK with direct control over the entire value chain. They might also be the only native African cacaofevier making their own chocolate in the UK – and they are based in Swale!
Come along to meet Ralph Eric, hear about his work and try some of the products he makes from Bean to Bar in Sittingbourne.
