Artist Kieren Reed invites Sittingbourne residents to collaborate with him on the design of a new structure for Milton Creek Country Park.

Do you use your local park, want to learn new skills or just want to find out more? All are welcome for this drop-in conversation and workshop.

Co-designing the Sittingbourne Barn is the first public conversation between artist Kieren Reed and people in Sittingbourne. Reed invites people from Sittingbourne and further afield to explore potential designs and uses for ‘the barn’, a new functional artwork that will be collaboratively designed and built for Milton Creek Country Park. During 2018 and 2019 participants will be trained in collaborative building, tool use, carpentry and construction processes.

Milton Creek Country Park is 128 acres of former landfill site that is now a green space, home to meadow, scrub and aquatic habitats and a rich haven for wildlife including the now rare shrill carder bumblebee.

Traditionally, a ‘barn raising’ was a moment where an entire community came together, pooling skills and expertise. Barn raisings were a widespread practice in rural 18th century America and across the world. Raising the Sittingbourne Barn will be an act of theatre for participants and spectators, with the dramatic lifting of the largest sections of timber from the ground and the performance of other traditional construction rituals, including ‘topping out’ and a feast onsite at the end of each working day.

Drop in to see materials about the barn raising throughout Tuesday to Saturday.
